Front Porch Awakening

It's been a long winter for many of us. And just about the time we think we've turned the proverbial corner, we get hit with torrential rain and temps barely hovering above the 40-degree mark (with wind chills of 33, no less!)
Well, guess what, Mother Nature? This lady is gonna fight back! (Read as "stay in denial" haha.)

I had already planted all of my pots with flowers...

I had begun to arouse the sad front porch from its winter sleep...

And I had created a small "masterpiece" for our front door.

Awhile back, I had "beefed up a wreath" (you can read more about that here.) Now that little wreath is suspended playfully on a door basket that I filled with branches, moss and faux flower and butterfly stems.

But Mrs. Robin is not happy with my activity on the porch! She has created her own cozy perch on our light and would very much prefer that we keep clear while she brings her young ones into this world.

Usually the purple finches beat her to the light fixtures each Spring. I noticed that they have been hovering around the porch but, as of yet, had not begun to build their own nest. Then, upon further inspection, I discovered something amazing! There are 4 large dark blue eggs in the nest, and one smaller light blue egg.

It looks like Mrs. Robin decided to rent out space to the finches this year! Have you ever seen anything like this?

I think this is one of those beautiful gifts that so often go unnoticed in our society's hectic modus operandi. I am grateful that today I uncovered something so special.

  4. Your creation is just gorgeous, and I LOVED seeing the sweet nest. What a loving mom to accept the little orphan egg.
I'd like to know who minds the nest and how they get along when they hatch. Amazing!

    1. Patti, I am also wondering what the robin will do when the baby finch hatches. I hope she will be kind until the baby can fly away.

  7. Your arrangement for the door is a masterpiece! At first I thought the nest was a decorative touch as well. I guess the birds were helping you out because it looks pretty there. It's interesting that there seems to be two different types of eggs.
We have quail that nest and they may share a nest with the same species, though I've heard they will share it with other birds too sometimes.

  9. Your wreath is lovely and love seeing the bird nest with eggs.
Last year, one of our Cardinals hatched a brown-headed cowbird and they came to the feeder together and she fed him. Funny scene, but Mrs. Cardinal did not know the difference. The female cowbird does not build her own nest. Instead, she waits until another bird temporarily leaves it's nest of eggs, then she places her eggs in the nest with the other eggs.
When the other bird returns to its nest, it will sit on all of the eggs, unaware that some do not belong there!
Not only will the other bird incubate the eggs, it will also raise the young as its own until they are ready to leave the nest!
Nature is so interesting. (information found on the internet)

    1. Audrey, I love your story about the cardinal and the cowbird :) Our robin has been sitting on all 5 eggs as often as she can (unless we open the front door and disturb her.) It has been really fun to observe her this Spring.
